About the role
COMPANY OVERVIEW
Deepgram is the leading platform underpinning the emerging trillion-dollar Voice AI economy, providing real-time APIs for speech-to-text (STT), text-to-speech (TTS), and building production-grade voice agents at scale. More than 200,000 developers and 1,300+ organizations build voice offerings that are ‘Powered by Deepgram’, including Twilio, Cloudflare, Sierra, Decagon, Vapi, Daily, Cresta, Granola, and Jack in the Box. Deepgram’s voice-native foundation models are accessed through cloud APIs or as self-hosted and on-premises software, with unmatched accuracy, low latency, and cost efficiency. Backed by a recent Series C led by leading global investors and strategic partners, Deepgram has processed over 50,000 years of audio and transcribed more than 1 trillion words. There is no organization in the world that understands voice better than Deepgram.
COMPANY OPERATING RHYTHM
At Deepgram, we expect an AI-first mindset—AI use and comfort aren’t optional, they’re core to how we operate, innovate, and measure performance.
Every team member who works at Deepgram is expected to actively use and experiment with advanced AI tools, and even build your own into your everyday work. We measure how effectively AI is applied to deliver results, and consistent, creative use of the latest AI capabilities is key to success here. Candidates should be comfortable adopting new models and modes quickly, integrating AI into their workflows, and continuously pushing the boundaries of what these technologies can do.
Additionally, we move at the pace of AI. Change is rapid, and you can expect your day-to-day work to evolve just as quickly. This may not be the right role if you’re not excited to experiment, adapt, think on your feet, and learn constantly, or if you’re seeking something highly prescriptive with a traditional 9-to-5.
Note: This is a remote role based in Pacific Time, with a preference for candidates located in San Francisco.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Deepgram is scaling fast, and the systems layer underneath our product has to scale with it. We've just completed a UI redesign of key surfaces, now moving into development — real product value, and with it, real design-system debt that no one owns end to end.
We're looking for a Staff Product Designer to own that layer. You'll take Cosmos — our design system — from a Figma library to a living, code-connected source of truth, and build the pipeline that keeps design and engineering in sync as the surface area grows.
This is not a component-maintenance role. You'll co-own implementation strategy with Engineering, set the governance that keeps the system healthy, and define how AI and agentic tooling fit into how we design. Voice AI is still inventing its interaction patterns; the system you build is what lets a small team invent quickly without fragmenting.
You'll report directly to the Director of Product Design. This is a Staff IC role — your impact shows up mostly in the leverage you create for others.
Your first chapter: Cosmos as the established source of truth, and a working Figma-to-code pipeline. From there, scope expands to AI-enablement.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Own Cosmos end to end — rebuild it in Figma against the new UI and establish it as the single source of truth for every product surface
- Drive the conversion of Figma components, tokens, and variables into coded components, and co-own the implementation strategy with Engineering
- Close the design-to-code gap — build the pipeline, the parity checks, and the shared vocabulary that keep design and production from drifting apart
- Define governance and a contribution model that works across both design and engineering, so the system stays healthy as more people touch it
- Identify and reconcile UI debt — starting with TTS and Voice Agent — and turn legacy surfaces into a plan, not a backlog
- Produce agentic-friendly design system artifacts that AI tooling can consume and act on, and document the AI-powered design workflows worth adopting
- Partner with Brand to explore extending the system into a brand sub-system
- Set the craft bar for interaction design and prototyping across the team, and mentor designers as we scale
YOU'LL LOVE THIS ROLE IF YOU
- Believe a design system is a product with users, not a folder of components
- Get energized by being foundational — defining what "good" looks like for a growing team rather than inheriting it
- Want the design-to-code problem as your actual job, not the thing you fit in between features
- See leverage as the point: your best week is one where five other people shipped faster because of something you built
- Are excited by a category still defining its interaction patterns — where the work is invention, not iteration
IT'S IMPORTANT TO US THAT YOU HAVE
We care more about expertise and leadership than years of experience.
- Deep experience building and scaling design systems — tokens, variables, theming, versioning, and the migrations that come with them
- Real fluency in how components become code — you've worked shoulder to shoulder with engineers on a component library and can hold your own on implementation tradeoffs
- Exceptional craft across UI, interaction design, and prototyping; you make technically complex surfaces feel considered
- A track record of establishing governance and contribution models that people actually followed
- A point of view on how AI changes the relationship between systems, components, and production code
- Experience designing for developers or technical users — APIs, SDKs, documentation, and console workflows, not just UI
- Strong business acumen — you connect systems work to measurable outcomes, not just consistency
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU HAD
- Experience leading a design system migration or a redesign rollout at scale
- Hands-on work with Figma variables, Code Connect, or similar design-to-code tooling
- Experience designing for real-time, latency-sensitive, or multimodal experiences — voice, streaming, conversational AI, or audio products
- Comfort designing for probabilistic systems — confidence levels, fallback states, graceful degradation
- Background in high-growth B2B companies with both self-serve and enterprise motions
- Experience extending a product design system into brand or marketing surfaces
